President U Min Aung Hlaing stated that the Pyin Oo Lwin Airport will be upgraded to facilitate the travel of domestic and international tourists and to enable the distribution of local fruits and flowers to other regions.
On May 17, 2026, the President inspected the implementation of tourism development, greening, and urban development projects in Pyin Oo Lwin.
Following this, he visited Anisakan Airport to inspect the progress of the airport upgrade. He also inspected the National Kandawgyi Garden and Pwe Kauk Waterfall in Pyin Oo Lwin.
"The current upgrading of this airport is intended for domestic flights," President U Min Aung Hlaing said. "It aims to further develop the tourism industry, enable the quick and easy transport of fruits and flowers produced in the Pyin Oo Lwin region to other areas, and support regional development. Given the current progress of the new airport construction, it is designed to handle around 1,000 travelers per day. Therefore, it is necessary to systematically arrange seating areas for passengers to rest inside the terminal."

He added that when upgrading the runway, systematic calculations and construction must be carried out to ensure it meets specified standards. He also emphasized the need to ensure safety for aircraft landings and departures, and to plant trees to make the airport environment green and pleasant.
Pyin Oo Lwin is a town that sees a high influx of domestic and international tourists. It is also located on the Mandalay-Muse-Jiegao (Myanmar-China) Union Highway trade route.
Furthermore, it is the town where Myanmar's military academies are located, and the government is currently planning to develop it into a healthcare city.
