It was announced on June 24, 2026, that the Myanmar military has launched a military offensive to regain control of the Kalewa-Yagyi-Monywa road, which is highly crucial for the India-Myanmar trade route project.
Amidst the armed conflicts in Sagaing Region that emerged after February 1, 2021, combined forces of the KIA and PDF had been controlling the Tamu-Kalay-Khampat trade route as well as the Kalewa-Yagyi-Monywa road.
Following this, starting from June 2, the Myanmar military launched a major offensive focusing on the Kalewa-Yagyi-Monywa trade route and the Tamu-Kalay-Khampat trade route within Sagaing Region.

Commuters and locals reported that along the Kalewa-Yagyi-Monywa trade route, the PDFs extorted money from cargo trucks and passenger vehicles, confiscated goods, smuggled timber, illegally extracted natural resources, transported and distributed illegal goods, and recruited new members.
The Kalewa-Yagyi-Monywa trade route is a trade path aimed at implementing a $4 billion project for India-Thailand-Myanmar trade.
Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing visited India from May 30 to June 3, 2026, where he held separate meetings with Indian Prime Minister Modi, Indian National Security Advisor Mr. Ajit Doval, and Indian External Affairs Minister Mr. Jaishankar to discuss trade, border stability, and security matters.
Following this, the Myanmar military launched its offensive to regain control of the Tamu-Kalay-Khampat trade route—an India-Myanmar border trade gateway in Sagaing Region—as well as the Kalewa-Yagyi-Monywa trade route, which is part of the India-Thailand-Myanmar trade route.
