Indian Prime Minister Modi and Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing met in New Delhi on June 1, 2026, to discuss rare earth elements and security matters.

Indian Prime Minister Modi stated that he had a productive meeting with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing, and that India is proud and pleased that the President chose India for his first official overseas trip.

Indian Prime Minister Modi said, "What is even more gratifying is that he began this visit in Bodh Gaya, a place blessed with the sacred aura of the Lord Buddha. We reviewed all aspects of India-Myanmar relations."

He further noted that Myanmar is a crucial nation for India's "Neighbourhood First," "Act East," and "Indo-Pacific" policies.

During the meeting with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing, Prime Minister Modi mentioned that they discussed ways to deepen cooperation across various sectors, including trade, rare earth elements, healthcare, connectivity, the restoration of ancient heritage, and capacity building.

Additionally, he stated that both sides agreed to cooperate closely on maritime security, cybersecurity, and other sectors.

Rare earth elements are currently being mined in Myanmar's Kachin State and Shan State.

The areas where these rare earth elements are mined are controlled by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), the United Wa State Army (UWSA), and the National Democratic Alliance Army (NDAA), with China playing the primary role in developing the operations.
